(Re)Integration

The (re)integration of victims of human trafficking is a process that usually begins during their inclusion in the Victim Care Program – safe accommodation. This operation is part of the broader program implemented by Društvo Ključ, which includes several projects under the Comprehensive Care for Victims of Human Trafficking. (Re)integration represents the stage after the recovery period, when, with the support of professional staff, a person gradually begins to rebuild their life—seeking ways to live in a safe working environment, form healthy relationships, and exist in a setting that does not endanger them again or trigger the so-called unconscious repetition of trauma.

Strengthening life skills and knowledge, gradually changing behavioral patterns, and especially how one responds to certain situations, are key to preventing re-victimization. The ultimate goal of successful (re)integration is simple: a life without recurring traumatic experiences—a life free from exploitation. To achieve this, we apply a variety of working methods, primarily from the field of social work, as well as selected therapeutic approaches and activities aimed at improving psychophysical well-being and recovery.

Based on our experience, we believe that the (re)integration process is what makes a crucial difference between a life in which a trafficking survivor receives support, progresses, and remains in safer environments—and a life in which trauma is unconsciously repeated through re-victimization, untreated addictions, chronic health issues, psychological distress, and other long-term consequences of sustained abuse.

From 2024 to 2027, the activity Continuation of the Protection of Victims of Human Trafficking and Their (Re)integration in the Republic of Slovenia is co-financed by the Ministry of the Interior and the European Union.
