KLJUČno na spletu

Duration: 2021

The KLJUČno na spletu (KLJUČ online) workshops were intended for children in the final grades of primary schools and the first years of secondary schools.

Most of the children and adolescents for whom the workshops were intended spend their free time in front of computers and communicating via online applications. During the epidemic, the time window for spending the day like this has increased even more, as those listed online are available also in the morning, when distance learning takes place. This is used to advantage by persons who, among other things, prey on young people with the aim of extortion and exploitation, including sexual. At the same time, various forms of peer-to-peer violence have moved online, where, according to research, it is mostly gender-based. Usually, young people get caught up in simple communication, which can lead to online harassment, violence, online sexual abuse and online extortion.

OBJECTIVES:

  • knowledge of various concepts related to online abuse: online harassment, online violence, online sexual abuse, online extortion, gender-based smearing, hate speech and harassment, threats of rape or murder
  • greater awareness of cyberbullying and its consequences; getting to know specific cases of border violations online
  • understanding the various consequences of inaction or a risky reaction to occurrence of online abuse
  • identifying ways of imposing stereotypical ideas by social networks
  • knowing the ways in which they can help (themselves) when online abuse occurs and how to act when they feel that they are victims of various forms of online violence/harassment
  • recognizing personal boundaries and knowing how to set them clearly even in the online environment
  • transcending stereotypes regarding consent in sexuality, pornography and prostitution
  • understanding the concept of learned helplessness and knowing the reasons why a person agrees to online blackmail which can also lead to prostitution

Da! življenju brez trgovine z ljudmi

Duration: 2014–2016

Project Da! življenju brez trgovine z ljudmi (Yes! to life without human trafficking) addresses especially young people, who are, due to their youth, inexperience, maybe even naivety, an excellent target for human traffickers, who lure them into their traps in various ways and sell and exploit them. Girls mainly for the purposes of sexual exploitation, production of child pornography and pornographic material, and boys for helping to attract girls and commiting other criminal acts, and some also for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Human trafficking is not measurable and we do not know the exact number of young people who not only ‘ran away from home’, but actually fall into the clutches of human traffickers – what really happened to them is usually only found out when they return home.

Project tackles preventive activities rather broadly, with the aim to cover greatest possible number of children and young people across Slovenia and in that way inform them with human trafficking to that extent, that they will be capabale to protect themselves and recognize the traps that trafficers set for them. It is important as well that workshops include young boys, who can also become victims of human trafficking. Besides that they can, being unaware of their criminal liability from the age of 14 on, become an important link in organized criminal groups by providing sexual market with underaged victims of human trafficking via unconscious recruitment. Growing boys can also become users of sexual services offered by prostitutes who are forced into that activity. So an important goal of prevention is for the boys to realise that forced prostitution is not a pleasure but in fact a rape.

It is therefore important to teach them to recognize persons who are in any way forced into any form of sexual or other exploitation ant to educate them how to help these persons.

    Drugačna zveza

    Duration: 2015

It has been proven that young people who have been in any way exposed to abuse or violence are most at risk of becoming violent themselves or of becoming victims of even worse forms of abuse, including victims of human trafficking. Violence against young people and amongst young people is a common phenomenon. The aim of the project Drugačna zveza (A different relationship) is to achieve that young people recognize different forms of violence and their own violent behavior, and to know how to act appropriately in cases of violence. The main guiding principles of the workshops which are conducted as part of the project at secondary schools and colleges in the Municipality of Ljubljana, are that violence is always entirely the perpetrator’s fault, that violence is a problem of society and not an individual, that violence is an abuse of power, for which there is no excuse and that non-violent behavior can be learned.

The participants in the project A different relationship are the Society for Non-Violent Communication, the Society SOS telephone for women and children – victims of violence, the Society Information Center LEGEBITRA, the Society ŠKUC, the Cultural and Artistic Society Transformator and the Society Ključ – center for the fight against human trafficking.

The project’s annual activities include preventive workshops on all forms of violence and human trafficking, which are intended for schoolchildren and students in the Municipality of Ljubljana. In the first part of the workshops, various scenes of violence are acted out, followed by a discussion on possible solutions to the scene and a lecture on all forms of violence and human trafficking. The  project A different relationship was concluded at the final event in October with a concert on the day of the fight against human trafficking in the Šiška Cinema, which is intended for young people and the general public.

    The pledge

    Duration: 2008–2011

The purpose of the project was to make young people aware of the forms of violence they are subjected to (physical, psychological, verbal, economic), to increase the sensitivity and visibility of their own violent behavior. The goal of the program was to achieve a level of awareness that by behaving appropriately before/during/after a violent situation everyone can contribute to a less violent environment both on an individual and social level.

It has been proven that young people who have been exposed to abuse or violence in any way are at the highest risk of becoming violent themselves or of becoming victims of even worse forms of abuse. Violence against young people and between young people is a common phenomenon. Ignorance and lack of awareness about the forms of violence, its causes and consequences also contributes to this.

In agreement with the schools, we organized one-off workshops for high school graduates, where we presented the PLEDGE and talked to them about forms of violence. The lecture covered the forms of violence, their implementation and emotional consequences.

At the end of the one-off workshop, participants are invited to sign the following »Pledge to Choose Non-violence«:

»As a mature and responsible person, I pledge that:

    • I will not cause violence
    • I will not overlook violence
    • I will not encourage violence
    • I will act appropriately in the face of violence
    • I will speak and act against violence

I will get acquainted with all forms of human trafficking
