Today we mark European Anti-Trafficking Day for the fourteenth time.
In some areas we have made remarkable progress in recent years: every key actor in Slovenia's anti-trafficking and prevention work now puts the victims of the various forms of exploitation first.
A comprehensive support system does exist. But we can see it is not enough. As a country we need to get better at identifying victims across the different forms of exploitation, genders and ages. We need a more effective criminal justice system, so that all perpetrators and everyone else involved in exploitation are prosecuted more effectively, convicted, and punished — including by confiscation of the assets gained from exploiting vulnerable people. And as a society we must take responsibility: report every case we notice to the authorities, and condemn those who take part in exploitation or use the services exploited people are made to provide. That is how we give people with experience of trafficking a real chance of getting out.
Just when we at Društvo Ključ think we have seen and heard everything, that no case can still surprise us professionally or wound us as human beings, another person with experience of exploitation walks through our door. And every new case is more complex still: we hear accounts of worse abuse, of people being devalued, tormented, humiliated, their human rights trampled.
Our focus on European Anti-Trafficking Day is therefore on the victims.
